Laying the Smackdown on Social Media: How Wrestling has Shaped the Social Landscape

Before I dive into the nitty-gritty of this blog, there is something that I need to clarify. I’m a wrestling fan.  So with that, I will be using kayfabe wrestling terms throughout this article.  I encourage many of you who may not be as tuned into the wrestling world to learn more about kayfabe wrestling terms by using the link displayed above.

The reality that I am a wrestling fan is something I had to come to terms with on my 21st birthday. I, like many other people my age, was a fan of wrestling during what was considered the “Golden Era”. Coined as the “Attitude Era”, wrestling in the 90’s and early 2000’s was defined by superstars like Triple H, The Heart Break Kid Shawn Michaels,  Kane, the Undertaker, Mick Foley, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and my favorite, Stone Cold Steve Austin.  Those truly were the glory days.

But like most, I grew out of wrestling when the guys I admired and raved about began retiring (but also because girls who I used to consider heels started to seem more like faces to me).

But I digress.

Is Twitter...Stupid? (And How to Avoid the Accounts that Drive Us All NUTS!)

I love Twitter. As a 22-year-old Internet addict, I’d choose it over Facebook in a heartbeat.  It is the fastest updating social media tool—bar none.  Twitter is a fantastic platform to voice your opinion and seek out other valuable opinions. Twitter is great way for like minds to interact in a way that may have never happened in the first place.  In my opinion, it’s the ultimate social media platform.

Just how powerful is Twitter?  Take a look at how Brobible.com leaked one of the biggest announcements to date through social media.  The online site reported the death of Osama Bin Laden via Twitter before any major news outlet had. This was possible because a Twitter user in Abbottabad, Pakistan unknowingly tweeted about the raid that led to his death. Since then, I haven’t relied on a major news outlet—I just use Twitter instead. When something major happens in the world, it trends. Within 5 minutes of Apple announcing Steve Jobs’ passing, it was trending worldwide. Ten minutes later, I saw it on TV.
